Whole Foods is a good company to support for several reasons. The first one is the most obvious, lots of organic food, lack of pesticides=better for the environment. Here are some other reasons I am a fan:
1. Last year they were rated # 24 on Forbes's best places to work, citing serious discounts (up to %30) off groceries for employees. My friend who worked there said they treated their employees pretty well, too.
2. The animal welfare rating: I go back and forth over whether I am a bad environmentalist because I am not a vegetarian. Although it would probably be best to be a vegetarian and it is certainly green to cut out meat, being able to tell where products are coming from and under what kind of conditions the animals have been raised makes me feel like I am able to make the most environmentally responsible carnivorous decision.
3.The fact that they tell you where everything comes from: Information is power. I certainly appreciate that I can choose organic or conventional produce, and also look at which produce comes from the closest location and probably had less of a carbon footprint in getting to the grocery store.
4. The Orange Local stickers: One could argue that whole foods actually takes away from small local food sources, but by picking the local products you can have your cake and eat it too. Support local farmers and local products that have less of a travel environmental impact, and support a sucessful large-scale chain that promotes environmental awareness.
